Our self catering guests usually love sourcing local produce and fresh food. They are particularly drawn to French markets for the unique experience and atmosphere that these traditional locations can provide. In this article we explore why French markets are so captivating and offer some tips to help you explore and enjoy them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What can you buy at a French Market? <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

French markets are known for their seasonal fresh produce. Fruit, vegetables, plants, and fresh flowers with meat, poultry, cheese, fish, and bread often feature. Row upon row of herbs and spices, walnuts, olives, and sun-dried tomatoes are laid out. Bonbons, nougat and pastries are temptations for the sweet-toothed amongst us. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Local and regional specialities may include honey, conserves, oils, handmade soaps, and crafts. Often produce is fresh from the farm or produced locally, and the stall manned by the growers or makers. Vendors proudly present their wares in colourful and enticing displays. At larger markets you may even see live poultry for sale, kitchen utensils, clothes, linens, shoes, and inevitably a local alcoholic beverage. Stallholders will invariably offer little tasters of their products; a morsel of cheese, a dash of oil or a miniature sample of saucisson. Enough to get the tastebuds tingling\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From cheese to wine to unique items found only at certain markets, you can try something new and exciting. This can be an enjoyable experience for those who enjoy sampling different types of food and drinks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reasons to visit French Markets<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Exploring a typical French market is a sensory experience. The beautiful displays and array of colours draw you in for closer inspection. It’s a chance to \u2018people-watch\u2019 and observe characters of all ages, some dressed to the nines, some in their workwear, enjoying their market ritual. The sound of passionate and enthusiastic vendors, and locals catching up with each other, swapping news and stories. Customers chatting with stall holders with a little live music perhaps in the background. It is an important social occasion. It is possible however, that the array of delightful aromas permeating the air is the most appealing. Freshly cooked paella on huge pans, roasting chickens ready for lunch, fragrant herbs and spices, or the essential oils from the soaps which wake up the senses and entice you over to have a sniff! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is a sustainable way to shop; seasonal, fresh, often local, using much less packaging and plastic waste, buying just what you need for the week ahead. Buying locally helps to support the local economy and is therefore welcomed. Stall holders are happy to answer questions and you can establish the origin and source of your purchase. Visitors can connect with local farmers and producers who provide insight into the production process. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The variety of products offered is greater than in a store, the bonus being you can sometimes even sample before you commit to buy! And there is no rush\u2026unless you arrive as the stall holders are packing up, just enjoy the moment. The quality of the products is typically very good, as vendors take pride in offering the freshest goods possible. Additionally, visitors have access to local delicacies and specialties that can\u2019t be found in regular grocery stores.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shopping at a French market is simply more vibrant and memorable than trudging around the supermarket. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where and when are French Markets held?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Most traditional markets are held weekly on set days in each town or village. They may be daily in larger cities, but probably with a day off on Sunday or Monday. They start early, from 8\/9 am, and generally wrap up by 12pm\/1pm.\u00a0\u00a0The best choice will be there if you are an early riser, but prices may be marked down towards the end. The choice is yours!\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are seasonal markets in the summer, when some areas may also hold night markets. These often involve entertainment and a meal, with an extended range of stalls such as craft, pottery, jewellery, clothes, and regional products. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Christmas markets are held in the Winter months. Certain areas that are renowned for regional specialities hold markets from time to time. In Southwest France for instance these might range from grander Bordeaux wine markets, truffles and foie gras in Perigueux, to a unique little autumn chestnut fair in the Dordogne. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Top tips to get the most from your market visit<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Getting to the market early will give you the opportunity to browse at leisure and take your pick of the products on offer.  Some vendors may run out early in the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Take your own bag. Bags are not generally offered except perhaps for small paper sacks for vegetables. A sturdy reusable bag is essential. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Greet the stall holder, even with a simple \u2018Bonjour\u2019. Etiquette matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tempting as it may be to touch the produce, don\u2019t serve yourself unless the vendor suggests this is ok. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Take cash and have small change. Card payments are not widely accepted at markets, and you will not be popular handing over a \u20ac50 note for some haricots verts at \u20ac2.50.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Queuing- this can be a novel concept at times, so be prepared to stand your ground and ensure you are noticed if you find too many people jumping in whilst you wait patiently in line. Some products can be very popular, and queues will form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Try to have some idea of the quantity you require in grams\/kg. Look at the prices whilst you are waiting. I have unintentionally purchased a sack full of walnuts. Delicious as they were I did not need that many! On another occasion an eye wateringly expensive wedge of vintage French cheese came home with me, which everyone agreed had the most incredible taste but blew the rest of the market budget.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Look out for special deals or discounts on purchases. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pace yourself. There\u2019s usually plenty to see so take your time to enjoy the experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
