Hi…we’re Mark and Jackie and we began our new life and adventure at the end of December 2020, leaving the UK and heading to South West France. The aim was to pursue our dreams and desire for a better work life balance. We had fallen in love with France following many memorable holidays, and eventually decided to relocate. Searching for the ideal location and property took several years and many viewing trips. 

Eventually we found ‘Le Gentil’, a 17th Century domain with rambling buildings, and 15 hectares of woodland and meadow. It was perfect for our dream to create a rural French retreat in a natural setting; somewhere we could live and work together. We planned to offer holiday accommodation for people who love nature and the outdoors.  A place to unwind, slow down and enjoy the peace and tranquillity of the surroundings. Our wish was to be outside more, in a preferable climate, and ultimately benefit from a healthier lifestyle. 

Le Gentil was somewhere we could explore our creative talents, utilise our skills, and engage with the seasonal rhythms of nature. Much discussion ensued about the experience and knowledge we both had from our previous life and careers in horticulture, creative crafts and teaching. We decided to take the plunge whilst we had the energy and enthusiasm for the renovation works required! It has been a whirlwind ever since. We continue to learn something new every day, whilst dealing with the many interesting challenges that present themselves.

Our aim is to keep working towards bringing Le Gentil back to life, enabling us to share this incredible place. With sympathetic renovations in keeping with its history and character, we also value living in harmony with the natural environment. It is both a privilege and a great responsibility.
