Welcome to Le Gentil Retreat
Welcome to Le Gentil Retreat, authentic holiday gîtes in rural Charente, France. An enchanting and peaceful setting surrounded by nature.
The picturesque domain features a traditional courtyard and pigeonnier (dovecote) with a pavilion roof. The courtyard is in a U shape with a gated entrance and statuesque horse chestnut tree. Traditional Charentaise style is evident with stone buildings, thick walls, and terracotta roof tiles. Some of the attics and rooms have oval oeil-de-boeuf window openings, and other features including exposed beams. The enchanting dwellings are surrounded by nature in an unspoilt rural setting.
History of Logis du Gentil
With parts suggesting it may date back to the 17th Century, Logis du Gentil’s history is still somewhat a mystery, and our research continues. However we believe that its residents may have included prestigious members of society in their time, including a Lord, the mayor and justice of the peace of Brossac.
We know at one point the domain was a vineyard, evidenced by the huge vats in the barn. Several families lived here in the various dwellings, working the land and growing food on the three potagers.
At one time Le Gentil was the home of a local baker who made bread in the ovens behind the main house. Locals recall bread being delivered to the surrounding villages, and one remembers his grandparents delivering salt for the baker.
Subsequently, parts of the barn were converted into holiday accommodation, as was La Petite Maison. Some years later, Le Gentil was used just as a private residence. Over time, the property and holiday gîtes became a little neglected, and the garden very overgrown, as the house was left unoccupied for some time.
The future of Logis du Gentil
Since moving in we’ve been working hard to be able to once again offer gîtes for rural French breaks. Every guest that stays is helping us move forward with our renovations. Whilst continuing with improvements and upgrades, we’re also working with nature to encourage biodiversity and create habitats for wildlife. We aim to be environmentally sensitive, to protect the land for future generations, and live in harmony with the natural surroundings.
A relaxing and peaceful holiday setting
We have a fabulous pool and a meandering site covering 15 hectares to explore, including meadow and woodland areas. Relax and unwind perhaps by drawing, taking photographs, birdwatching, or by finding a shady spot to read a book. Or maybe your preference is basking in the sun by the pool, the choice is yours. By night perhaps dine alfresco and be entranced by the incredible starlit skies, and sounds of nature settling in for the evening.
Each gîte has its own terrace or garden area for alfresco dining. Additionally there is a courtyard with BBQ facilities. The gîtes are separate from each other, and our house. We live on site with our Labrador Teo, so are here if you need us, but you have your own independence and privacy. There is ample parking on site. Le Gentil Retreat is not suitable for very young children.
Thank you for reading, and we look forward to sharing our little piece of paradise with you!
