What is a French Gîte?

Origins
The word “gîte” may possibly originate from ‘gitane’, a gypsy lady in French. Henceforth ‘gitane’ then became associated with their humble dwellings. Later, this evidently became ‘gîte’, and referred to the remote mountain huts used by travellers and hikers. Alternatively, it is suggested the word came from the old French ‘gesir’ (giste) meaning to lie down. Interestingly however, the French verb “gîter,” means “to lodge.” It was nonetheless in 1951 that the first gîte officially opened, in an abandoned barn on a farm in the Alps. What started as an attempt to help farmers supplement their income became a popular as a unique holiday experience.
Gîtes can now be found throughout France and are often located in picturesque locations such as vineyards, farms, and coastal areas. Usually in the typical style of the area, these holiday rentals may originally have been farmworkers’ dwellings or barns.
