Wildlife and Nature in the Charente

The Charente region of France is a beautiful and diverse area that is perfect for experiencing wildlife and nature. From lush forests and rolling meadows, lakes and rivers, this region provides a wealth of opportunity for travellers who want to get up close and personal with nature. With an abundance of wild animals, incredible birdwatching opportunities, and stunning scenery, the Charente is the perfect holiday destination for those looking to immerse themselves in the beauty of the outdoors. There is something for everyone in this exquisite part of France.

What wildlife to expect in the Charente

The Charente region is home to a wide array of wildlife, including deer, boar, hares, badgers, and many more species. Awash with butterflies and bees, the wildscape comes alive in the warmer weather. Birdwatchers will be delighted by the variety of birds that can be found in the area, including woodpeckers, hoopoes, warblers, and more. The secretive golden oriole continues to elude me, although I have not yet spotted one, their whistling song is unmistakable, and I eagerly anticipate its arrival. Fortunately, the landscapes in the Charente are incredibly diverse, and provide numerous opportunities to explore a wide range of ecosystems.

Lakes, vineyards and nature reserves

The Lac Bleu de Guizengeard is only a few minutes from us here at Le Gentil. A former kaolin quarry now turned into a stunning nature reserve, the home of frogs, turtles, otters and beavers amongst others. The turquoise blue lake waters are mesmerising. Set against white clay cliffs with an oak and pine forest backdrop, it is a simply magical place to visit. On a sunny day the sky reflects into the deep crystal clear water.

The Charente is also famous for its cognac, which is made from grapes grown in the area’s vineyards. The vineyards themselves are also a beautiful sight to behold, with rolling hills and fields of grapevines stretching as far as the eye can see.

Slightly further afield is the Parc Naturel Regional du Périgord Limousin. Located on the eastern border of the Charente region, this nature reserve covers over 1,800 square kilometres, and is home to a wide range of wildlife including deer, wild boar, and birds of prey. The neighbouring Charente Maritime and Gironde departments border the Atlantic Ocean, offering visitors the chance to explore sandy beaches, rugged cliffs, and picturesque fishing villages. The regions are also home to a variety of seabirds, dolphins, and other marine life.

Outdoor activities

Aside from its natural beauty, the Charente also offers a peaceful atmosphere that makes it ideal for outdoor activities. Hiking, cycling, kayaking, fishing, and birdwatching are all popular activities in this region, providing visitors with plenty of ways to explore the area’s natural wonders. Additionally there are a number of golf courses such as Cognac, overlooking the river Charente and set in the middle of vineyards.

When exploring the Charente’s great outdoors, it’s helpful to plan and bring the necessary supplies. A good pair of hiking shoes or boots is essential for navigating rugged terrain. Closed toe footwear is normally required for kayaking. A camera or good phone is also a must for capturing stunning views and wildlife sightings. Additionally, it’s important to carry enough food and water for your adventures, as well as a first aid kit for emergencies and mosquito repellent! Bike hire is available locally, and we have a small range of fishing equipment that can be borrowed. We can also recommend hiring electric scooters, ‘trottinettes’, for an all terrain ride through the vineyards.

Benefits of experiencing wildlife and nature

Spending time outdoors can have numerous benefits for our wellbeing. Fresh air and peaceful surroundings are known to reduce stress levels and provide peace of mind. Being active in nature has also been linked to improved mental clarity and focus, enhanced physical fitness and strengthened relationships with friends and family.
